Pythagoras was a generous and brilliant mathematician, no doubt, but he did not make the great leap to applying the Pythagorean Theorem to coordinate grids. To take us from his Theorem of the relationships among sides of right triangles to coordinate grids, the mathematical world had to wait for René Descartes. His Cartesian grid combines geometry and algebra. You can use formulas, including the Distance Formula, to get precise measurements of line segments on the grid.Coordinate geometry is a method of studying geometry with the help of Algebra. Here we represent any point in a plane by its distances from two fixed perpendicular lines. The horizontal line is called the x-axis and the vertical line is called the y-axis. The point of intersection of these lines is called the origin ‘O’, as shown These two lines together are called the coordinate axes. The position of a point in a plane is determined with reference to the intersecting straight lines called coordinate axes. Their point of intersection is called the origin of coordinates. If these two axes of reference cut each other at right angles, they are called rectangular axes. It is the distance between y-axis and the point ‘P’ which is measured in the direction of x-axis. In the adjacent diagram, the distance between y-axis and the point p in the direction of x-axis is BP.
